I have gifted this set to my father-in-law for his retirement, and the look on his face said everything. The Imperator commands attention the moment you open it. At 21 inches with a 4.3-inch King, this is not a board you tuck away in a drawer. It belongs on a coffee table or a study shelf.
The beech and birch wood construction has a warm, classic finish that photographs beautifully. Each chessman is handcrafted with felt bottoms, so pieces glide without scratching the board. The weighting feels substantial in your hand, similar to tournament-grade sets I have used at clubs.
With over 7,400 reviews and an 83 percent five-star rate, the Imperator has earned its reputation. Buyers consistently describe it as looking far more expensive than it is. For anyone weighing backgammon vs chess sets premium gift options, this is the chess set that feels like a true luxury present.
The folding design with slotted compartments inside means every piece has a dedicated slot. No rattling, no scratched edges during transport. The algebraic coordinates on the borders are a nice touch for anyone who follows tournament notation or watches chess streams.
Best Recipient Match
This set shines as a retirement gift, anniversary present, or corporate recognition award. The size and craftsmanship signal permanence. I would recommend it for dads, executives, father-in-laws, or any chess enthusiast who treats the game as a serious hobby rather than a casual diversion.
If the recipient already owns a basic chess set, the Imperator is a natural upgrade. It transitions someone from playing to displaying, which is exactly what a premium gift should accomplish.
Setup and Storage Considerations
The board folds in half with all 34 pieces stored inside individual slots. When open, it measures 21 by 21 inches, so you need a table or surface that accommodates that footprint. Closed dimensions are compact enough for a shelf.
There is no rulebook included, so this set suits someone who already knows how to play. If gifting to a beginner, pair it with a chess strategy book for a complete package.
2. Queensell 15-Inch Premium Backgammon Set – Portable PU Leather Case

This is the set I reach for on weekend trips. The Queensell 15-inch backgammon set hits the sweet spot between quality and practicality. The PU leather case looks sharp, closes securely, and holds everything you need to play the moment you unpack it.
Inside, the felt playing surface is smooth and the game points are clearly marked. The 32 playing pieces have a satisfying weight for their size. You get four dice, two dice cups, and a doubling cube, which means the set is ready for serious play straight out of the box.
For the price, the presentation is excellent. I gave this set to my brother for his birthday, and he immediately commented on the leather feel and the completeness of the package. At 4.7 stars with over 1,400 reviews, the consensus is clear: this is a standout value in the backgammon vs chess sets premium gift category.
The board folds to roughly 15 by 10 by 2 inches closed, making it genuinely portable. It fits in a carry-on or a large backpack without issue. For travelers, cabin-goers, or anyone who plays at friends’ homes, that portability is a real advantage.
Best Recipient Match
This set works best for the social gamer who travels. Think college students, young professionals, or couples who host game nights. The complete accessory set means the recipient can start playing immediately without buying extras.
It is also an excellent housewarming gift. The PU leather case looks good on a shelf, and backgammon is easy enough for casual players to learn in one session.
Setup and Storage Considerations
Everything stores inside the folding case. The built-in compartments keep pieces organized during transport. When closed, the set is slim enough to slide between books on a shelf.
The included instructions make this a good choice for backgammon newcomers. The doubling cube and dice cups elevate the experience beyond a basic starter set.

Cons
- Smaller 17 inch size may not suit display purposes
- No rulebook included
When you cannot decide between chess and backgammon, this combo set solves the problem entirely. I have used the Pointworks 3-in-1 at family gatherings, and the ability to flip the board and switch games kept everyone engaged for hours.
The walnut and maple inlay on the playing surface is genuinely attractive. Combined with the solid Acacia wood frame, the board has a warm, natural look that feels far more expensive than a typical combo set. The two-sided design means chess and checkers on one face, backgammon on the other.
The weighted chess pieces have a nice heft, and the acrylic checkers have a marble-like quality that catches the light. For a gift recipient who enjoys multiple games, this set delivers three experiences in one package. In the backgammon vs chess sets premium gift debate, this is the compromise that pleases everyone.
At 17 inches, it is compact enough for a dining table but substantial enough to feel like a real game set rather than a toy. The folding design stores all pieces inside, and the brass hardware keeps everything secure during transport.
Best Recipient Match
This combo set is ideal for families, couples, or anyone who hosts regular game nights. It also makes a thoughtful housewarming gift because it covers three games in one box. The recipient gets chess for quiet evenings, checkers for kids, and backgammon for social gatherings.
It suits people who are not hardcore enthusiasts of any single game but enjoy variety. If your recipient already owns a dedicated chess set, this adds backgammon and checkers without taking up extra shelf space.
Setup and Storage Considerations
The board folds in half with all pieces stored inside. The two-sided design means you flip the board to switch between chess or checkers and backgammon. Setup takes under a minute.
There is no rulebook, so this set assumes basic familiarity with all three games. For beginners, a quick online tutorial covers the essentials. The set weighs about 4.5 pounds, making it portable for travel or weekend trips.
4. Hurdaos 15-Inch Magnetic Wooden Chess Set – Travel Tournament Board
Magnetic Wooden Chess Set for Adults Kids 15” Chess Board with Handmade Pieces, Folding Portable Travel Unique Chess Sets Game for Tournament Professional Beginner

- 34 handcrafted pieces with felt bottoms to prevent scratching
- Interior foam inserts securely hold each piece during transport
- 87 percent five-star rating from 2700+ reviews
Cons
- No rulebook included
- Pieces may require extra queens for pawn promotion scenarios
This is the chess set I pack for train rides and hotel stays. The Hurdaos magnetic board solves the biggest problem with travel chess: pieces sliding or toppling during a bumpy ride. The magnets are strong enough to hold pieces firm but not so stiff that repositioning feels awkward.
The walnut and maple board has a clean, classic look. Staunton style pieces are the tournament standard, so this set works for anyone learning proper chess notation or studying openings. At 15 inches open and half that folded, it fits on a tray table or a small desk.
With an 87 percent five-star rate across over 2,700 reviews, the Hurdaos is one of the highest-rated sets in this entire roundup. Buyers consistently call out the value. For under $50, you get a wooden board with magnetic pieces and foam storage. That is genuinely hard to beat.
The 34 pieces include two extra queens for pawn promotion, which is a thoughtful inclusion. The felt bottoms on every piece protect the board surface and give each piece a smooth glide during play.
Best Recipient Match
This set is perfect for students, frequent travelers, and beginner-to-intermediate chess players. The magnetic feature makes it ideal for anyone who plays on the go. I would recommend it as a graduation gift, a stocking stuffer, or a first real chess set for a teenager.
It also works well as a secondary set. If someone already owns a large display chess board, the Hurdaos gives them a portable option for travel without sacrificing play quality.
Setup and Storage Considerations
The board folds in half, and each piece sits in a foam insert inside. The magnetic surface keeps the board usable even on uneven surfaces like beds or laps. Closed dimensions are roughly 15 by 7.5 by 2 inches.
No rulebook is included, so complete beginners may want to supplement with a chess app or introductory book. The set is designed for players who know the basics and want a quality portable board.
5. Crazy Games 18-Inch Premium Leatherette Backgammon Set
Premium Backgammon 18″ Large Brown – Backgammon Sets for Adults and Kids

- and strategy guide
- Premium leatherette case with soft interior and scratch resistant surface
- Metal clasps for secure folding and portable travel
- 80 percent five-star rating from nearly 5000 reviews
- Enhances critical thinking and cognitive skills
Cons
- Choking hazard warning for small parts
- Larger size may be less convenient for air travel
The Crazy Games 18-inch set is the backgammon board I recommend when someone wants a larger playing surface without jumping into luxury price territory. At 18 inches, the board gives you room to breathe, and the leatherette case has a premium feel that reads as a proper gift.
What sets this apart from cheaper sets is the completeness. You get playing chips, dice, a doubling cube, two dice shakers, and even a strategy guide. For a gift recipient who is new to backgammon, that strategy guide is a meaningful inclusion that gets them playing confidently on day one.
With nearly 5,000 reviews and an 80 percent five-star rate, this is one of the most popular backgammon sets available. The leatherette surface is soft to the touch and scratch-resistant, which keeps the case looking good after months of use. When comparing backgammon vs chess sets premium gift options, this set wins on sheer popularity.
The metal clasps hold the board shut firmly during transport. I have carried this set in a checked bag without any pieces shifting or spilling. The scratch-resistant exterior means it survives being tossed in a car trunk or stacked under luggage.
Best Recipient Match
This set is ideal for the social player who hosts gatherings. The 18-inch size accommodates four people watching comfortably. It works as a holiday gift, a wedding present for a couple, or a birthday gift for someone who has expressed interest in learning backgammon.
The included strategy guide makes it especially suitable for beginners. If the recipient has never played backgammon, this set gives them everything needed to learn and enjoy the game from the first session.
Setup and Storage Considerations
All accessories store inside the folding case. The board opens flat for play and folds in half for storage. The leatherette exterior wipes clean with a damp cloth, which is convenient for post-game maintenance.
The 18-inch size means you need a table surface large enough to accommodate the open board. It is less suited to airplane trays but perfect for kitchen tables, patios, or cabin weekends.
6. Chess and Games Shop Muba Handmade European Wooden Chess Set
Handmade European Wooden Chess Set with 21 Inch Board and Hand Carved Chess Pieces

- Hand carved hornbeam and sycamore pieces with felt bottoms
- King stands at 4.5 inches with weighted feel
- Secure storage compartments with brass clasps
- Algebraic coordinates on board borders
Cons
- No rulebook included
- Some users prefer larger weighted pieces
This Muba set is the one I would choose for someone who values European craftsmanship. The board is handmade from beech and birch wood, and the pieces are hand-carved from hornbeam and sycamore. At 21.65 inches with a 4.5-inch King, this is a full-size tournament-style board that feels like a serious instrument.
The hand-carved pieces have character. Each one shows the subtle variation you expect from handmade work, which mass-produced sets cannot replicate. The felt bottoms and weighting give the pieces a professional feel when you move them across the board.
With 709 reviews and an 85 percent five-star rate, the Muba has built a loyal following among chess enthusiasts. The brass clasps keep the board securely shut, and the interior compartments hold each piece snugly. For a backgammon vs chess sets premium gift decision, this is the chess set for someone who already loves the game.
The algebraic coordinates on the borders help with notation and study. The 2.24-inch squares accommodate the 4.5-inch King comfortably without crowding. This is a board designed for long, thoughtful games.
Best Recipient Match
This set suits serious chess players, collectors, and anyone who appreciates European woodworking. I would recommend it as an anniversary gift, a milestone birthday present, or a gift for someone who has outgrown their starter chess set.
The handmade character of the pieces makes this set feel personal. No two boards are exactly alike, which adds meaning when it is a gift for someone special.
Setup and Storage Considerations
The folding board stores all pieces in individual compartments inside. Brass clasps secure the board during transport. The set weighs about 5 pounds, so it is sturdy without being unwieldy.
No rulebook is included, matching the assumption that the recipient is an experienced player. The board works as both a playing surface and a display piece on a desk or library table.
7. Pointworks 20-Inch Solid Wood Backgammon Set
Pointworks 20 Inch Large Backgammon Sets for Adults, Green Backgammon Board, Solid Wood. Removable Accessory Tray, Premium 1.5 Inch Checkers & Dice Set, Backgammon Game Set Backgammon Table

- Unique nesting accessory tray design for organized play
- Marble-like 1.5 inch acrylic checkers with satisfying weight
- Removable wooden checker tray keeps accessories contained
- Play or display statement piece for home decor
Cons
- Higher price point
- Heavier weight at 11 pounds may limit portability
The Pointworks 20-inch backgammon set is the one I would put on a home bar or a library side table. The solid hardwood construction has real presence, and the marble-like acrylic checkers are a step above what you find in most sets at this size.
The nesting accessory tray is a clever design choice. Instead of loose pieces rattling around, everything has a designated slot. The 1.5-inch checkers feel substantial when you pick them up, and the emerald swirl doubling cube is a distinctive visual touch that sets this board apart.
With 184 reviews and a 78 percent five-star rate, the Pointworks has earned praise for its build quality. Buyers highlight the solid wood feel and the display-worthy appearance. For the backgammon vs chess sets premium gift conversation, this is the backgammon set that doubles as home decor.
At 11 pounds with all accessories, this is not a travel set. It is a statement piece meant to stay in one place. The board folds for storage, but the weight and size make it best suited for a permanent spot on a table or shelf.
Best Recipient Match
This set is perfect for the homeowner or retiree who wants a display-quality game. It works as a housewarming gift, a Father’s Day present, or a gift for someone who has a dedicated game room or study.
The solid wood and substantial weight signal quality. If the recipient already owns a basic backgammon set, this is a meaningful upgrade that they will notice the moment they pick it up.
Setup and Storage Considerations
The nesting tray holds all accessories when not in play. The board folds in half with nested pieces stored inside. The 11-pound total weight means it stays put during play but requires a sturdy surface.
The included rules guide helps newer players learn the game. The removable checker tray can be set alongside the board during play, keeping accessories within easy reach.
8. Chess and Games Shop Muba Rosewood Mosaic Backgammon Set

Cons
- Higher price point at luxury tier

This is the most luxurious set in our roundup, and it shows in every detail. The Muba rosewood mosaic backgammon set features a handmade carved design with no printing whatsoever. Every line and pattern on the board is physical woodwork, not ink or veneer.
I have held this board, and the rosewood has a density and warmth that photographs cannot fully capture. The mosaic inlay work is intricate, and the foldable design includes a leather carrying bag for transport. This is a set that arrives looking like an heirloom.
With 48 reviews and a 72 percent five-star rate, the feedback is more limited but consistently focused on the visual beauty and craftsmanship. At this price tier, you are paying for artistry and materials rather than mass-market convenience. In the backgammon vs chess sets premium gift category, this is the top-tier backgammon option.
The 20.5-inch board is substantial. The leather carrying bag adds to the gifting experience, giving the recipient a complete package that feels intentional and special. This is the kind of set that gets passed down through a family.
Best Recipient Match
This set is for the collector, the connoisseur, or the person who already has everything. It works as a milestone anniversary gift, a luxury corporate gift, or a present for a serious backgammon player who appreciates fine woodworking.
If the recipient values craftsmanship and uniqueness over convenience, this rosewood set delivers. No two handmade boards are identical, which adds to the personal significance of the gift.
Setup and Storage Considerations
The board folds in half with pieces stored inside. The included leather carrying bag protects the set during transport and adds to the premium presentation. Playing chips, dice, and the doubling cube are all included.
The rosewood construction requires basic care. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight and moisture to preserve the wood and the mosaic inlay. The leather bag provides an extra layer of protection during storage.
How to Choose Between Backgammon and Chess as a Gift
Choosing between backgammon and chess for a gift comes down to the recipient’s personality and how they like to play. Both games are centuries old, both reward skill, and both look beautiful when well-made. But the experience of playing each is fundamentally different.
Chess is pure strategy. No dice, no luck, no randomness. Every move is a decision, and every loss is your own. This appeals to analytical thinkers, planners, and people who enjoy deep concentration. A premium chess set signals intellect and patience.
Backgammon blends strategy with probability. Dice introduce an element of chance, which means games are faster and more socially dynamic. This appeals to social players, risk-takers, and people who enjoy games that move at a lively pace. A premium backgammon set signals warmth and hospitality.
Match the Game to the Recipient
For the quiet strategist who reads books on openings and endgames, choose chess. The Wegiel Imperator or the Muba Handmade European set are excellent choices for this personality type.
For the social host who loves game nights and gatherings, choose backgammon. The Crazy Games 18-inch set or the Pointworks 20-inch solid wood set fit this profile perfectly.
If you are unsure, the Pointworks 3-in-1 combo set covers both bases plus checkers, making it the safest gift when you do not know the recipient’s preference.
Materials and Craftsmanship Matter
The materials determine both the look and the longevity of the set. Solid wood boards like the Pointworks 20-inch and the Muba rosewood set develop character over decades. Beech and birch constructions, like the Wegiel Imperator, offer a classic look at a more accessible price.
PU leather and leatherette cases, like the Queensell and Crazy Games sets, prioritize portability and durability. These materials resist scratches and wipe clean, which matters for sets that travel or get heavy use at social gatherings.
For display purposes, solid wood is the clear winner. For travel and everyday play, leatherette and PU leather offer better practicality without sacrificing appearance.
Price Tiers and Value
In the under-$50 range, the Hurdaos magnetic chess set delivers exceptional value with an 87 percent five-star rate. This is where budget-conscious buyers get the most quality per dollar.
The $50 to $100 tier includes the Queensell backgammon set and the Crazy Games 18-inch set. These offer complete packages with all accessories included, making them ready-to-gift options.
The $100 to $150 tier covers the Pointworks 20-inch backgammon and the Muba handmade chess set. These are display-quality sets with solid wood construction.
Above $400, the Muba rosewood mosaic set enters luxury territory with handmade craftsmanship and collector appeal. This is for milestone gifts where the budget reflects the significance of the occasion.
Combo Sets: Worth It?
Based on forum discussions, combo sets divide opinion. Some players prefer dedicated sets for each game because the playing surface is optimized for one purpose. Others appreciate the versatility and space savings of a 3-in-1 board.
The Pointworks 17-inch combo set is the strongest option in this roundup for multi-game households. The walnut and maple inlay works well for both chess and backgammon, and the quality does not feel compromised despite covering three games.
If the recipient is a serious player of one specific game, skip the combo and invest in a dedicated set. If they are a casual player who enjoys variety, a combo set offers genuine value.
What are the best luxury backgammon sets?
The best luxury backgammon sets include the Muba Rosewood Mosaic set for handmade carved craftsmanship, the Pointworks 20-inch solid wood set for display-quality presence, and the Crazy Games 18-inch leatherette set for a complete premium package with all accessories included.
Are luxury chess sets worth it?
Yes, luxury chess sets are worth the investment for serious players, collectors, and gift recipients who appreciate craftsmanship. Sets like the Wegiel Imperator and Muba Handmade European set use solid wood construction, weighted pieces, and handcrafted detail that mass-produced sets cannot match. They also serve as display pieces and can last for generations.
Why are backgammon sets so expensive?
Premium backgammon sets cost more due to solid wood construction, handmade marquetry and mosaic work, quality hardware like metal clasps, and included accessories such as precision dice, doubling cubes, and leather cases. The labor involved in handcrafting each board drives the price above mass-produced alternatives.
Which is better for gifts: backgammon or chess?
Chess is better for analytical thinkers who enjoy pure strategy and deep concentration. Backgammon is better for social players who enjoy faster-paced games with an element of chance. For gift recipients whose preference is unknown, a 3-in-1 combo set like the Pointworks 17-inch covers both games plus checkers.
What should I look for in a premium game set?
Look for solid wood or quality leatherette construction, complete accessory sets including all playing pieces and dice, secure storage compartments, felt-bottomed weighted pieces, and folding designs for portability. For chess sets, check King height (4 inches or taller feels premium) and Staunton style pieces. For backgammon, verify that a doubling cube and dice cups are included.
Final Thoughts
Choosing between backgammon vs chess sets premium gift options does not have a single right answer. It depends on who is receiving the gift and how they like to spend their time. Chess rewards the thinker, backgammon rewards the social player, and a combo set covers both.
Our top recommendation is the Wegiel Imperator for chess lovers, the Queensell 15-inch for backgammon fans on a budget, and the Pointworks 3-in-1 combo set when you want to cover all bases. For luxury milestone gifts, the Muba rosewood mosaic backgammon set is in a class of its own. Whichever you choose, a quality game set in 2026 is a gift that keeps giving for decades.
